Places of Interest

Mamanuca -The Mamanuca Islands and the islands of Nadi Bay offer tourists some of Fiji's most outstanding island beauty and are home to a range of resorts that are as different as they are unique. Top it off; the Mamanucas also lie in a weather belt boasting the South Pacific's highest "sunshine factor".

Yasawa - The Yasawas are famous for crystal blue lagoons and some of the Pacific's most ethereal beaches. The islands have white sandy beaches and crystalline waters, lush tropical rainforests and soaring volcano peaks that attract fresh tropical rain. The Yasawas are accessed daily from Port Denarau and Lautoka by fast catamaran and resort water taxis; or seaplane and helicopter from Nadi.

Mile Long Beach & Lomanisue Bay - Situated on the east side of the island is Mile Long Beach, which is just what the name implies. Although it may be windy in the afternoon it is a fantastic beach with great views of a Fijian sunrise. Also a good spot to snorkel. It is sometimes called Lomanisue Beach, after the Bay that is formed by the crescent-shape of the bay. If you wish to walk along the beach it is best to avoid high tide as the high water mark is quite high.

Coral Coast - The Coral Coast stretches along the beaches of Fiji's main island linking Natadola in the West to Waidroka Bay in the East. It has one of the largest fringing coral reefs in the world. Dotted with stunning white beaches and ringed by a turquoise coral reef and a deep blue Pacific Ocean the Queens Highway meanders through stunning scenery, Fijian villages, sugar cane fields and lush hills.

Suncoast - The Suncoast region boasts magnificent mountain ranges, rolling countryside, tropical forests, rivers and waterfalls; coral reef gardens, Skeleton-filled caves, white sandy beaches, and picturesque islands of Macuata, Tovu, Nanuyakoto, Malake, Dolphin, Nananu-i-ra and Nananu-I-Cake. This region is particularly rich in culture and tradition, the arts of storytelling and traditional dancing.

Vanua Lavu - Vanua Levu is the second largest island of the Fiji archipelago and has the second largest population. With an area of 5,587sq km, it is just over half the size of Viti Levu and 18% of the country’s total population.

Denarau Island - Nearby, and joined by a causeway, is Denarau Island, home to luxury resorts, a championship golf course and a marina. Denarau is the starting point for cruises to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, and is the home of Shotover Jet. This very exciting high speed boat departs every 30 minutes seven days a week to the islands.

Suva - the Capital of Fiji, was developed in the late 1800's and retains much of the character of the colonial period. Its many attractions include shopping, restaurants, nightclubs, markets, a museum and sightseeing tours. You can enjoy a walk around the central city area, which will uncover numerous surprises.

Nadi - Nadi (pronounced Nandi) is where most visitors hear their first BULA. The colorful marketplace, located only a few minutes drive from the airport, features yaqona stalls, homemade souvenirs and local culture. Nadi is also the gateway to the Mamanuca Group where you will find exquisite island resorts as well as laid back surfer camps and budget accommodation. Nadi is where you'll find the most visitor facilities in Fiji and, of course, the greatest number of souvenir shops and it's also known for an ancient therapy mud bath at the Sabeto's Outback.

Cuisine

Nowadays Fiji cuisine is a great mixture of Polynesian, Indian, Melanesian, Chinese and Western cuisine. Some of the most used ingredients in Fiji cuisine are yam, breadfruit, cassava, taro root (dalo) and leaves (rourou). Also meat is staple of this complex cuisine such as Beef, poultry and Pork. And of course one can never say “no” to a great dish made with seafood. Most of salads, appetizer, soups or beverages are obligatory made with the exotic fruits found here such as guava, mango, bananas and pineapple. Alongside with the coconut milk, these fruits can be used to prepare either sweet or salty and spicy dishes.

Generally when cooking a Fijian main course one could always include meat, poultry garnished with cassava ortaro and boiled taro leaves. To increase the flavor of any dish ingredients such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, fenugreek, coriander, cumin, Indian-Fiji curries and chilies are a must. Any traveler trough this country can find besides the local and Indian cuisine many types of international cooking.

Climate

Fiji's climate is tropical. Overall, temperatures between November and April (summer) are slightly higher than the winter months, as is the humidity and the resulting tropical downpours. Light cotton clothes are advisable at all times - only between May and October (winter) will a light sweater be needed for nights and early mornings.

However, the weather in Fiji varies considerably between island regions. This is due to the dominant south-east trade winds which traps clouds over the mountains on the south-eastern sides of the larger islands - rainfall in Suva is much higher than in Nadi on the western, leeward side of the main island which is good if you want to experience the vibrant rainforest but not so good for sun-bathing.
