| Why
you Want to Visit Namibia |
Namibia, officially
the Republic of Namibia, is a country in southern
Africa on the Atlantic coast. It shares borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east, and South
Africa to the south.
Namibia generally attracts eco-tourists with the majority
visiting to experience the different climates and natural
geographical landscapes such as the great eastern desert
and plains. There are many lodges and reserves to accommodate
eco-tourists. In addition, extreme sports such as sandboarding
and 4x4ing have become popular, and many cities have
companies that provide tours.
The most visited places include the Sossusvlei, Etosha
Pan and the coastal towns of Swakopmund, Walvis
Bay and
Lüderitz.

| Places
of Intrest |
Etosha
National Park - Is one of Southern Africa's finest and most important
Game Reserves. Declared a National Park in 1907 and covering
an area of 22 270 square km, it is home to 114 mammal
species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibian
species and, surprisingly, one species of fish.
The Waterberg Plateau - Towers 400 metres above the surrounding
plains, and 1878 metres above sea level, dominating the
landscape for miles around. The plateau itself is 48 km
at its longest point, and 16 km at its widest. The history
is rich. The oldest rock stratum is 850 million years old
and dinosaurs left their tracks here 200 million years
ago.
Sossusvlei - Sossusvlei is some 60km from Sesriem, and
the drive takes about an hour. The gate from Sesriem
to Sossusvlei opens in time for people using the campsite
to drive to Sossusvlei before sunrise. People making
use of other accommodation in the area will probably
not be able to reach the vlei for sunrise, or stay for
sunset.
Kaokoland - This is one of the mostly barren and inaccesable
regions of the world. Occupied by a nomadic people, The
Himba, who still live in according to ancient traditions.
Visiting this region can be extremly rewarding but the
enviroment and cultures are extremly fragile and are
been eroded by irresponsible tourism. For this reason,
and for your own safety, it is reccommended you visit
the area accompanied by a guide.
Damaraland - Damaraland is the old apartheid name given
to the region south of Kaokoland and north of the main
road to Swakopmund. It is still commonly used in tourism
circles, although the entire region has now been renamed.
Swakopmund - Swakopmund is Namibia's favourite holiday
town. It has an abundance of German style architecture,
which coupled with the predominantly overcast weather
gives the bizarre feeling of a German town. During the
summer holidays thousands of Namibians flock to the coast
to spend their holidays away from the intense heat of
the interior.
|
| Climate
|
Namibia's
climate is typical of semi-desert terrain, hot days and
cool nights. The coastal regions are cooled by the cold
Benguela current, causing fog and inhibiting rainfall.
Over the central plateau in the country which is higher
up, temperatures are understandably lower.
Summer is from October to April. Temperatures can reach
40º C which plummet at night to cool levels. Average
daily temperatures range from 20 to 34º C. Winter
is from May to September with wonderful warm days which
are contrasted by very cold nights, when temperatures
often drop to below freezing.
|
| Language |
| Until 1990,
the official languages were German, Afrikaans and English.
When Namibia became independent of South Africa, the
new Namibian government wanted to avoid accusations
of preferential treatment for either the Afrikaans-
or the German-speaking groups. Therefore, English became
the sole official language of Namibia. German, Afrikaans
and Oshiwambo became recognised regional languages.
German is the native language of 30,000 Germans living
in Namibia. It is also spoken as a second language
by a large group of the white population. A part of
the black population also speaks German as a second
language, although it is used primarily for trading
purposes. Namibia is the only country outside Europe
where German enjoys any official status.

| Cuisine
|
Cuisine in
Namibia is interesting and varied. In the south part
of Namibia the most frequent component is the corn. The
corn is used in preparing the bread which is generally
served with shellfish, in season or tomato-based sauces.
The most common meat type used in the southern cuisine
is fish and Chicken, schnitzel, plus good, fresh seafood,
but we can also find goat, Beef and bush rat. As for
vegetables the most popular are rice, beans, tomatoes
and couscous due to the fact that the climate in Namibia
is hot and dry. Is very simple to find fruits in this
county principally oranges, bananas, mandarin oranges,
pineapples, kiwi, avocado, peanuts.
Namibia is known
all over Africa for its exotic dishes and its exotic
ingredients which offer an exclusive taste. Beans and
rice is a popular dish served as appetizer in west
part of Namibia. Namibian meat is characterized by
top position
locally produced Beef and mutton, animal protein including
ostrich, zebra, Game Birds, and seafood such as kabeljou,
rock lobster and oysters. Outdoor cooking is part of
the Namibian way of life. The traditional braaivleis
which is meat barbecue is a delicious meal, as is potjiekos,
a hot stew of meat, Chicken or fish cooked over an
open fire in a cast-iron, three-legged pot. |
